Leonard Nimoy - If I Were A Carpenter

“Another ‘modern’ folk song, sung by Nimoy in an unusual rhythmic setting.” — the record sleeve for the album Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy.

One of my favorite Nimoy songs, along with Both Sides Now, and Love of the Common People.

"Love does happen"

Love does happen
Like a touch
of grace

It falls
Into place
Where there used
To be
Empty Space

When I hold your
Face
In my hands
I ask
How did this happen
To me?

-Leonard Nimoy

The italics are my own; this is my favorite part.

I am waiting for this to happen to me.

Leonard Nimoy - Sunny

(Lyrics by Bobby Hebb)

It sounds silly when I write it out like this, but recently this song (and his voice in it) has been the main thing keeping me from becoming depressed again. (I hope so, at least, I could easily be sliding back in without realizing)

Leonard’s “Love of the Common People” and his recitation of “Desiderata” (“Spock Thoughts”) have been such a cheer to me lately as well, when I’ve just been feeling down and inadequate on numerous fronts. What a gift certain music is.

All the best wishes to you.

Be not cynical about love

Love does happen
Like a touch
Of grace

It falls
Into place
Where there used
To be
Empty space

When I hold your
Face
In my hands
I ask
How did this happen
To me?

-Leonard Nimoy

post scriptum: And when will it happen to me?

"Because"

Because
I have known despair
I value hope

Because
I have tasted frustration
I value fulfillment

Because
I have been lonely
I value love

-Leonard Nimoy

This is reminiscent, to me, of the Prayer of St. Francis, my favorite supplication.

Unpretentious Poetry

An odd thing: I’ve been trying my hand at some poetry as of late. The last real verses I wrote were composed more than a year ago. I suppose I can accredit inspiration to Leonard Nimoy, who besides being a marvelous actor, is a poet. People magazine called his poems “unpretentious, sometimes moving.” I am sure they are always moving. But if I would like my own poetry to be anything, I’d like it to be unpretentious.

Thank you
For a world
Of kindness

Thank you
For your
Endless patience

Thank you
For your
Sensitive understanding

Thank you
For Your
Love

- Leonard Nimoy
